Semax

A Russian developed peptide with the stress hormone part deliberately cut away.

PropertyValue
TypePeptide, 7 amino acids
OriginFragment of ACTH with a tail added
Research fieldAttention, memory, protection of nerve cells
Research statusClinically used in Russia, not registered elsewhere
FormFreeze dried powder

What it is

ACTH is the hormone prompting the adrenal gland to make cortisol. Semax is a short stretch of it, extended with a three amino acid tail for stability. The hormonal action is gone.

How it works

The mechanism named most often is BDNF, a protein nerve cells use to maintain connections and build new ones. Effects on dopamine and serotonin are also described.

What the research shows

In Russia it is registered and clinically used. A large part of the literature was published in Russian and not always translated, so a search in English databases returns less than exists, and independent replication is often missing.

Research status

Registered in Russia, a research compound elsewhere.

Practical

An N-acetyl variant of Semax also exists, with a cap at the start of the chain keeping it intact longer. Otherwise it is the same molecule.
